"Because we all need a restful night's sleep."
Jefferson Memorial Hospital has one of the most up-to-date sleep facilities in the region. In affiliation with West Virginia University Health Associates, our goal is to provide high quality service to the community. Approximately 40 million Americans are chronically ill with some form of sleep disorder. If you or someone you know has a sleep/wake problem, these symptoms should be discussed with a family doctor.

Patients may experience excessive daytime sleepiness, CHF episodes despite medical treatments and shortness of breathing wile sleeping or laying flat.

Neuromuscular Disorders and Diseases
The broad category of neuromuscular disorders or diseases covers conditions that involve the weakness or wasting of the body muscles. Some may be hereditary, while others are acquired. An EMG study may be ordered by a patient's physician to diagnosis a neuromuscular disorder or disease and then to determine the best ourse of treatment. Patients who exhibit signs of breathing difficulty may require a sleep study to be performed.

Treatment
Only you and your doctor can decide what the best treatment will be for your condition. Sleep apnea may be treated by some behavioral changes and oral mouth devices. Some conditions may require surgery to open the airway. The most common treatment is nasal CPAP therapy. Narcolepsy is usually treated with medication to improve alertness. Discuss the different options with your healthcare provider to start getting a better night's sleep.

Sleep Studies
A sleep study is performed to confirm the presence of a sleep disorder and to assess the presence of a sleep disorder and to assess the level of severity of the disorder. Delay in seeking testing to determine if you have a sleep disorder can delay the start of effective treatments. This can lead to an increased risk of cardiovascular illness, risk of auto accidents and an increased risk of death.
