A Team Approach to Care
In most cases, a cancer patient's care will require an integrated approach using many different medical disciplines. Utilizing a team approach to care, the WVUH-East Regional Cancer Program is supported by a number of hospital departments including…
Food and Nutritional Services — Registered Dietitians provide medical nutrition therapy as appropriate to each patient's needs. Assistance with food tolerance, selection of medical nutrition supplements, and modified diet or nutritional education is also available.
Diagnostic Radiology — state-of-the art technologies include but are not limited to, ultrasound, CT scanning, MRI, Interventional Radiology, Nuclear Medicine, digital mammography, and mobile PET/CT services.
Medical Oncology — services include consultation, treatment planning, chemotherapy, pain control, and palliative care, under the direction of Board Certified Oncologists.
Pathology and Laboratory Services — full service laboratory accredited by the American College of Pathologists and the American Association of Blood Banks.
Pharmacy — responsible for drug dosage circulation and the preparation of various types of chemotherapy agents specifically individualized to each cancer patient. Our pharmacists remain active in reviewing the newest chemotherapeutic agents available so that the most up-to-date medications can be utilized.
Radiation Oncology — located in a special suite on the First Floor of the McCormack Center on City Hospital's campus, we offer the most advanced form of radiation treatment available.
Social Services — provides patients and their families information about community resources, financial assistance, support services, in-home care resources, as well as emotional support and guidance. Spiritual, cultural and social values that influence a patient's perceptions are taken into consideration to provide appropriate interventions.
Surgical Services — whether the primary modality of therapy or in conjunction with the treatment plan, our Board Certified surgeons keep abreast of the latest surgical techniques.
Vascular Therapy — Registered Nurses provide services to patients requiring any type of intravenous therapy. Inpatient and outpatient services include BCG immunotherapy,
transfusion of blood and blood products, I.V. antibiotic therapy, injections of medications requiring a hospital setting, and more.
Additionally, physicians from all specialties involved in the care of cancer patients, as well as representatives from hospital departments, community organizations, and the Cancer Registry, actively serve on the Cancer Committee, a group responsible for the organization of all cancer services our program offers.
A Tumor Board, comprised of various medical specialties, also meets to discuss and provide recommendations for formulating treatment plan options for selected patients receiving care through the Program.
