MARTINSBURG, W.Va. – The laboratory at West Virginia University Hospitals-East’s City Hospital in Martinsburg has been awarded accreditation by the Accreditation Committee of the College of American Pathologists (CAP).
Jeffrey A. Stead, MD, medical director of the hospital’s laboratory, was advised of this national recognition and congratulated for the excellence of the services being provided. The accreditation was based on the results of a recent onsite inspection by CAP.
City Hospital is one of more than 7,000 CAP-accredited laboratories worldwide. During the accreditation process, inspectors examined the laboratory’s records and quality control of procedures for the preceding two years. Inspectors also examined laboratory staff qualifications as well as the lab’s equipment, facilities, safety program and overall management of the laboratory.
This rigorous inspection program is designed to specifically ensure the highest standard of care for all laboratory patients. The CAP Laboratory Accreditation Program, begun in the early 1960s, is recognized by the federal government as being equal to or more stringent that the government’s own inspection program.
