Offers 3rd Annual OWLS Event
Want to be Older, Wiser, Living Stronger? No matter what your age, young or old, it’s not too late to start living healthfully and achieving your optimal health. The 3rd Annual OWLS Event is open to all ages who want to age healthfully.
The OWLS Program originally targeted Seniors 55+ to encourage physical activity and staying strong throughout life. For the 3rd Annual Event, we are opening the program to all ages because who wouldn’t want to be Older, Wiser, Living Stronger? The program will offer opportunities to learn about various health issues that affect us all, free screenings and exercise demos. The program is a collaborative effort of WVUH-East, The Wellness Center at City Hospital, WVU Extension, Martinsburg-Berkeley County Parks and Recreation, Hospice of the Panhandle, Berkeley County Health Department, Eastern Panhandle Medical Reserve Corps and the American Cancer Society
The event will be held March 24, 2010 from 8:30 am--12:30 pm at the Robert C. Byrd Health Science Center, behind the McCormack Center on City Hospital’s Campus.
Presentations will include “Exercise and Healthy Aging” by Dr. Mark Cucuzzella of Harpers Ferry Family Medicine, “Cooking with Herbs and Spices” with Sue Flanagan and Karin Kozlowski of WVU Extension, “Got Heart:--Understanding Coronary Artery Disease and Prevention” with Dana Price, RN, BSN, “Advanced Directives” with Laura Newberry of Hospice of the Panhandle and “Got Sugar--Understanding Diabetes” with Joan Starliper, MS, RD, LD and Pam Gesford, RN, BSN, CDE. Free screenings will include glucose, blood pressure, resting heart rate, pulse oxygen, hearing, waist circumference, body mass index and skin sun damage. Colorectal screening kits and breast teaching models will also be available. Dr. Bowen, from the Center for Positive Aging, will be on hand to answer questions about protecting and treating sun-damaged skin.
Information booths featuring Hospice of the Panhandle and Advanced Directives; WVUH-East Home Health Care; Martinsburg-Berkeley County Parks and Recreations’ Silver Sneakers Program; American Cancer Society and health information will be available. Pneumonia vaccines will be offered for a fee from the Berkeley County Health Department.
The program is made possible by a generous donation from Shockey Corporation. Refreshments will be provided by Heritage Financial Services featuring many foods that are locally grown and produced.
