Medical Surgical/Pediatrics Department
Our Medical/Surgical/Pediatric Unit supports the mission, philosophy, goals and values of Jefferson Memorial Hospital. This 16-bed unit provides care for patients with a wide variety of clinical conditions, including those recovering from surgeries, those hospitalized for an acute condition, and others who may be in the final stages of a progressive and chronic disease. Nursing is an integral part of the team, which includes multidisciplinary collaboration, and exchange of professional expertise with the common goal of quality patient care. Staffing is comprised of a skill mix of Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, and Nursing Assistants. Unit Secretaries round out the team, and function as support to all direct care giver staff. The specific mix is determined by patient acuity, census, and the workload of the unit.
Since children are also admitted to this unit, treatment is not only multi-disciplinary, but also family centered. Parents are encouraged to participate in their child’s care, and can spend the night if they choose. Siblings under adult supervision and family friends can visit for short periods during the day until 8 P.M. Relatives and friends are welcome to visit, but if they have an illness that might spread to other children, it is best they do not visit.
This unit commonly referred to as Station 1 located on the second floor has assigned staff that can best care for the different healthcare issues such as: orthopedics, medical/surgical diagnoses, telemetry monitoring. Therapies and treatments provided on this unit include: blood transfusions, antibiotic therapy, pre- and post-operative care, supportive nursing care for the acute and terminally ill, pain management , discharge planning and patient and family education. Physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and respiratory therapy are also provided by our Rehab. Services as indicated. All rooms are equipped with in-wall suction and oxygen. Patient controlled analgesia pumps are available for use in pain management, and intravenous pumps are used for those receiving intravenous therapy.
Daily multidisciplinary meetings take place including the case manager, social worker, clinical pharmacist, clinical nutritionist, physical therapist, speech therapist, occupational therapist, and staff nurses to collaborate on each patient with the goal in mind to give the best chance possible for an early return home and continued recovery. |

Visitor and Patient Information
At the time of admission, each patient should designate one family member as the contact person. The contact person shall be the one to call for information regarding the patient’s condition and relay that information to other family members. Remember that federal law prohibits nurses to give out information indiscriminately along with the fact that every telephone call takes the nurse away from his/her patients. Respecting the privacy of other patients, and their families is of prime importance; therefore, our staff cannot answer questions about other patients.
Regular visiting hours are from 11a.m. to 8p.m. Although we do have set visiting hours, we do make exceptions. Consult with the nurse on the unit about special visiting arrangements. For concern of our patient’s health, people with illnesses should refrain from visiting. Infection Control: Careful hand-washing is the best defense against the spread of disease. Wash your hands before and after meals, toileting, or any treatment
Please remember that Jefferson Memorial Hospital is a non-smoking facility, and smoking is not permitted in any unit of the hospital. Noise should be kept to a minimum. |
