The
survival rate of women diagnosed with breast cancer has increased
significantly over the past five years. One of the main reasons
for this is early detection. This includes a breast self exam,
clinical exam and mammography findings. |
| |
Because
breast cancer is the second leading contributor in the fatality
rate of women diagnosed with cancer, the American Cancer Society
recommends that women have their initial mammogram between
the ages of 35 and 40, have regular mammograms every other
year or every year until the age of 50, and every year after
50 years of age. |

Jefferson
Memorial Hospital uses the R2 Image Checker Computer Aided
Detection (CAD) system for mammography. This high-tech equipment
digitizes the mammography image, allowing radiologists to
better identify areas of suspicion. Because subtle differences
exist between normal tissue and breast disease, masses and
calcifications may be difficult to detect. Studies show as
much as a 24 percent increase in detection through the use
of the CAD system. |

Jefferson
Memorial is currently the only hospital in the Eastern Panhandle
to offer this service to patients. Individuals interested
in scheduling a mammogram should contact their physician for
an order. |
